I support numerous countries around the world, developing their emissions inventories, providing training and capacity building

Chris Dore, Director

Chris has been working in the air quality and climate change fields for 25 years, and is recognised as one of Europe’s leading experts in estimating emissions to air. He advises the UN, the European Commission and numerous national governments around the world.

As the Chair of the UN/ECE’s Taskforce on Emission inventories and Projections, Chris is responsible for steering the development of emissions inventory methodologies contained in the EMEP/EEA Emissions Inventory Guidebook – the central reference manual for air quality pollutant emissions inventories. He has also authored formal guidance for greenhouse gas emissions estimates. He is a UNFCCC qualified expert reviewer of greenhouse gas emissions inventories, and is a lead reviewer of both air quality pollutant emissions and adjustments. His expertise is supported by a broad scientific knowledge, in particular atmospheric and environmental physics and chemistry.

Chris has provided support to numerous countries around the world, developing their emissions inventories, creating policy support tools, and providing training and capacity building. He has worked with European Union Member States, and in Eastern Europe, the Caucuses, Central Asia, South East Asia, India, China and the Caribbean.

In the UK, as a member of the Air Quality Expert Group for 6 years Chris provided scientific support to the Government. He has also supported the review of the local authority air quality action planning process, assessing the quality of the UK emissions inventory and delivering improvements as part of the UK emissions inventory programme. On secondment to the Air Quality Science and Evidence team in Defra for a year, he provided policy support on issues associated with compliance with the EU Directives, and in particular on issues associated with transport and agriculture.

Prior to founding Aether, Chris was the Programme Director of the UK emissions inventory, leading a team of 20 technical staff, with overall responsibility for the UK’s air quality and climate change emission inventories. For his PhD he undertook the measurement of CO2 emissions/uptake from different vegetation types.

Away from work Chris enjoys sport, and in particular: softball, swimming, cycling and running. He also tries to make time for painting, unicycling and playing the drums.
