Mayors Sustainable Development Indicators
The Mayors’ Sustainable Development Indicators service allows municipalities to measure their progress over time, and benchmark themselves to other comparable municipalities across the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. The service reflects municipalities' performance across various themes like climate change, equality, and well-being.
The service has been developed with our Finnish collaborator Benviroc, and is funded by Tekes (the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation).
The Radar chart below is an example developed for a municipality, showing their progress against each UN SDG theme.
The service currently covers more than 45 indicators which have been selected in collaboration with pilot municipalities in Finland, Sweden and the UK. Their data is benchmarked against over 750 municipalities in these countries. We welcome all interested municipalities in Europe to join.
Becoming a Member Municipality has many benefits:
- For Mayors, the Indicators give you an easily accessible overview of your Municipality’s performance and progress over time. The knowledge-sharing feature allows you to compare with and connect to other forerunners.
- For Environmental officers – Through the long-running time series, the service keeps all sustainability information in one place. It is a cost-efficient solution for meeting internal and external reporting requirements and for identifying areas for further improvement. The continuous development of the service allows you to influence which indicators the service covers.
- For Citizens – Through the Indicator service citizens gets access to sustainability information that is easy to understand, empowering them to engage in improving the sustainability of their neighbourhood. The indicators have been developed to facilitate sharing of information on sustainable development to citizens with varied experiences and backgrounds.
Development of the service started in 2017 to identify relevant sustainability indicators together with pilot cities in Finland, Sweden and the UK. The full service will be launched in 2018.
