Chris has been working in the air quality and climate change fields for 20 years, and is currently the Chair of the UN/ECE’s Taskforce on Emission Inventories and Projections. His key skills include:

- Air Quality and climate change policy support and formation for Governments and International organisations.
- Emissions inventory compilation (air quality and greenhouse gases), inventory review, improvement, methodological compliance, management and QA/QC procedures
- International training and capacity building
- National representation in the international arena, and on expert panels.
- Project and programme management

As the TFEIP Chair, Chris is responsible for overseeing the maintenance of the EMEP/EEA Emissions Inventory Guidebook – the central reference manual for air quality emissions inventories, as well as co-ordinating international contributions.  His recent international project work has included compiling the first NECD emissions inventory for Turkey, supporting the Irish Government in compiling their inventories, undertaking research into ultrafine particles for the European Commission, and transport policy work in India and Indonesia.

In the UK, Chris has been involved in reviewing the LA Air Quality Action Planning process, assessing how well the UK emission inventory compares with other European national inventories, compiling emission estimates for the UK crown dependencies and overseas territories, and helping to improve the Merseyside emissions inventory. He was also seconded to the Air Quality Science and Evidence team in Defra for a year, where he provided policy support on issues associated with transport, agriculture, metals and persistent organic pollutants.

Chris has a sound grounding in atmospheric and environmental physics and chemistry, and expertise in several research fields. He is a qualified UNFCCC reviewer, a lead reviewer of air quality inventories, and has been involved in reviewing Defra research programmes. Prior to Aether, Chris was the Programme Director of the UK emissions inventory, leading a team of some 20 staff, with overall responsibility for the UK’s air quality and climate change emission inventories. For his PhD he undertook the measurement of CO2 emissions/uptake from different vegetation types.
