Projections expert panel
Melanie Hobson is a co-chair of the international Task Force on Emission Inventories and Projection's (TFEIP) Projections Expert Panel. This panel aims to improve emission projections across countries by sharing information and developing best practice. The expert panel has been involved in a number of key initiatives including the EMEP / EEA emissions inventory Guidebook update in 2009 and more recently in compiling a report on the different flexiblity mechanisms available for the revision of the Gothenburg Protocol.

UK emissions projections
Aether consultants have designed and built detailed emissions projection models as well as developed and secured the flow of essential data into them so that they can be kept up-to-date. Melanie Hobson, prior to joining Aether was responsible for the development, compilation and submission of the UK’s emission projections under the National Emissions Ceilings Directive and the Convention on Long Range Transboundary Air Pollution (CLRTAP). The projections also provided a key role in the development of Government policy. Melanie, whilst working for Aether, continues to provide advice to Defra on projections. Recently Melanie has been working with AEA, AMEC and Imperial College to further enhance collaboration in the development of emission projections and to analyse alternative scenarios.
NO2 abatement scenarios
Chris Dore has been on secondment at Defra. Part of this work involved assessing a range of potential measures designed to reduce NO2 emissions - both at the national scale and, by liaising with Local Authorities, at specific geographical locations. The results from this work were then used to develop a strategy for tackling NO2 hot spots in the UK and formed part of the UK’s Time Extension Notification to the European Commission.
Global transport scenario model
In 2010, Melanie developed a global transport carbon dioxide scenario spreadsheet model with TRL, the Institute of Transport Studies in Tokyo and the Mizuho Information and Research Centre in Tokyo. The project involved development work in Tokyo for 10 days. The model utilises the International Energy Agency's Mobility Model (MoMo) for the baseline data and allows various avoid, shift and improve scenarios to be explored for 11 global regions. Aether is now working on a follow on project assessing transport activity and measures in the Association of South -East Asian Nations.
EC projection guidelines
Aether and TNO have been commissioned to develop greenhouse gas emission projection guidelines in support of the EU's effort sharing decision. This project brings together a team with long standing experience and excellence in developing and using GHG emissions projections and working with Policies and Measures at a national and international level. The team will make use of their well established and respected connections with stakeholders and member states built upon our history of work on the EUMM, GHG and other pollutant emissions inventories and projections, as national inventory and projections compilers, as lead reviewers in annual inventory and national communications review and in the development of projections and policies and measures guidance and support (for the NECD, EUMM and the UNECE).
