Project win: odour assessment

31 August 2010

Aether and AEA Technology have been commissioned by a planning consultancy to undertake an odour assessment for a residential development in close proximity to a waste water treatment works in Leicestershire.

Odours emanating from the site were raised as an issue in the planning appeal and further work is now required to provide support for a subsequent planning application. Due to it being difficult to collect odour samples from the source and that collecting odour samples at the site boundary or in the local neighbourhood not being recommended because odour measurements do not differentiate between odour sources, a desk based study will be undertaken. This will include reviewing planning policy and guidance, reviewing the activities that are carried out on the site, estimating the odour emissions arising from the site by using odour emission factors for WWTW plants based on the activities carried out on this particular site and then doing dispersion modelling using ADMS to assess the resulting odour concentrations around the site
