Climate Emergency Support for Kensington and Chelsea

6 October 2020

Aether is starting a project with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC) on “The Route to Carbon Neutral and Development of Climate Emergency Action Plan”. The consortium, including CAG Consultants and SE2, will support the Council following the declaration of a climate emergency last year.  RBKC set ambitious targets: for the Council’s operations to be net zero carbon by 2030, and for the whole borough to be carbon neutral by 2040.

The work will involve creating an evidence based pathway to carbon neutrality for the Council and the borough, to underpin the development of a new Climate Emergency Action Plan. We will use our GHG inventory tools, carbon scenario model and our experience of recent work with other local authorities to analyse the GHG data and model carbon pathways that RBKC can consider. The climate actions will be accompanied with cost-benefit analysis and consideration of the co-benefits and potential for green recovery following COVID-19.

We are pleased to continue our work supporting local authorities with climate emergency declarations, recognising the pivotal role that local organisations hold in influencing emissions and the importance of cross-government cooperation in achieving Net Zero for the United Kingdom.
