Stakeholder workshop in eSwatini

30 October 2018

Alongside the UNEP-Danish Technical University partnership, Aether is helping the government of eSwatini – formerly Swaziland – to develop a Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) transparency system to enable data sharing and improved long-term climate planning, as well as meeting requirements of the Paris Agreement.

Laurence Opie and Tim Williamson spent a week in the country’s capital, Mbabane, meeting key government data holders as well as helping to deliver a stakeholder workshop on the design of the MRV system. Khetsiwe Khumalo from the eSwatini Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Affairs is leading the work which is seeking funding through the Capacity Building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT). This was set up under the Paris Agreement to support developing countries put in place the institutional arrangements and technological and human capacity to deliver high quality and transparent climate data.

eSwatini is a small country, with around 1.3m inhabitants and was classified as a net carbon sink in its 3rd National Communication. Nevertheless, it is determined to play its part in the international effort to address climate change and Aether is proud to be assisting that effort.
