Updated Analysis of Air Pollution Exposure in London

10 October 2016

Aether was commissioned by the GLA to update the Analysing Air Pollution Exposure in London report produced in 2013. The Interim Report for the updated analysis is now available. The full report will be published later this year. The purpose of the report was to examine the variations in exposure to air pollution across the social spectrum in 2013 and how this is expected to change in future years. Our analysis found that:

  • 32% of people living in areas of poor air quality in London are from the most deprived groups, whereas only 7% are from the least deprived. This compares to 17% and 22%, respectively, in areas where the Limit Value for NO2 is being achieved.
  • The air pollution burden falls proportionately higher on some ethnic groups than on the white population, although the effect is not strong.
  • A fifth of London primary schools and a quarter of all schools are in areas of poor air pollution.
  • People in areas of poor air quality are less likely to be over 65 or under 19, reflecting the population of inner London.
