Aether visit BMW’s Mini Plant in Oxford

18 May 2015

Aether took time away from their computers to visit the Mini plant in Cowley, Oxford. Cowley has an impressive car building heritage, with Morris Motors originally being established on the site. Things are rather different these days, with the cars initially being assembled by robots, and then the more intricate work by the manned production line. Each car on the production line is unique, requiring parts to be provided in the right place at the right time.

It was also very encouraging to hear about the steps that BMW have taken to improve their environmental performance at the Mini plant. They have made some large investments, and the modern machinery has meant substantial improvements to their energy efficiency. In addition the plant uses rainwater harvesting, and the solar panels on the roof of the plant make up one of the largest solar farms in the UK.
