Implementation of the EU Emissions Trading System report published

29 April 2015

Aether, as part of the European Topic Centre for Air Pollution and Climate Change Mitigation (ETC/ACM), contributed to the EEA report published today on the implementation of the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). The EU ETS is a cornerstone of the European Union’s policy to combat climate change and its key tool for reducing industrial greenhouse gas emissions cost-effectively. The first international system for trading greenhouse gas emission allowances, the EU ETS covers more than 11,000 power stations and industrial plants in 31 countries, as well as airlines.

EU Member States report every year on the application of the EU ETS Directive (Article 21 (1) of the Directive). The EEA technical report on the application of the ETS Directive provides a synthesis of the country information submitted. The technical report considers where implementation is on track, where there is potential for improvement and where further information is required to determine the status of implementation. It also provides an initial analysis of greenhouse gas emissions in relation to fuel consumption. In addition to EU Member States, the report also covers Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
