Power Query Workshop in Estonia

18 May 2026

Aether delivered a two-day workshop in Estonia to build the inventory team’s capacity on Excel power queries.

Estonia is required to annually report GHG emissions data to the European Union and under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Since Aether set up the spreadsheet-based GHG inventory files, the GHG inventory team has experienced challenges with running the power queries that automate data flows in the files. This has included staff changes and changes to activity data collection templates in recent years.

The inventory team also wanted to improve their use of Aether’s key category analysis tool set up to help automate the process of determining key categories in Estonia’s inventory, as well as to gain an improved understanding of the available QA/QC tools to improve the inventory’s QA/QC procedures.

The workshop focused on providing detailed practical training on the power query editor, in the context of Estonia’s inventory files. Over the course of the two days, the inventory team developed expertise in building power queries that have improved flexibility to respond to template changes over time.

The Aether team presented and demonstrated their bespoke key category analysis and Q-Comments tools to showcase potential options to simplify the inventory team’s reporting of key categories and QA/QC procedures.

From the feedback received, the Estonian GHG inventory team now have an improved understanding in building and editing power queries in the inventory files to automate the flow of activity data into the compilation files and have the confidence to use Aether’s KCA and Q-Comments tools.
