Project win: LAEI boiler emissions

Aether continues to provide consultancy support to the Greater London Authority to make improvements to the London Atmospheric Emissions Inventory (LAEI).  Working with AMEC, Aether are developing new methods for estimating NOx emissions from boilers in London and updating the 1km resolution emission maps for the residential sector. The LAEI currently estimates that gas use from heating buildings accounts for 16% of NOx emissions in London, but predicts that this contribution will increase as transport emissions decline. This project will consider in detail the stock of boilers in London and calculate boiler age profiles to improve emission factors used in the LAEI calculations.

A further element of the work is to consider the achievements in London of recent phases of the RE:FIT and RE:NEW programmes which aim to improve energy efficiency in public sector and residential buildings.  Aether will calculate the air quality benefits of these schemes and provide recommendations on how the schemes can be modified in future to bring further air quality benefits.
