Project win: LAEI update

16 April 2015

Aether will this summer be updating the London Atmospheric Emissions Inventory (LAEI) on behalf of Transport for London (TfL). Aether, working with Amec Foster Wheeler and Bureau Veritas, will improve calculation methodologies and update estimates for key sectors of the inventory including residential and commercial heating and electricity use, industrial processes, Waste processing, construction, shipping and rail.  The updated emissions data will be published in the Autumn of 2015.

Emission inventories are a fundamental tool in air quality management, supporting policy formation and providing fully quantified scenarios of emissions forecasts.  This allows policies to be refined to give the most effective improvements in air quality.  The LAEI data ensures that emissions reduction policies and proposals developed by the Greater London Authority and/or Transport for London can be assessed in the context of good quality, bottom-up data on emissions from all sources.

Aether’s work to update the LAEI builds on previous projects we have undertaken for TfL improving individual sectors over the last three years.  This year we will be updating all sectors except road transport and aviation and we will also be supporting TfL in developing a streamlined data aggregation process to ensure the LAEI datasets are available for use in a flexible way by a variety of users.
