Recent Air Quality Assessments by Aether

9 October 2020

Aether has been working on many air quality assessments over the last few months. These have ranged from small to large scale residential schemes to assessing the impact of biomass boilers on local pollutant concentrations.

One recent example includes a proposed development of more than 1,200 residential units, a primary school and flexible commercial units for a site in Goodmayes in the London Borough of Redbridge. For this assessment, a six month diffusion tube survey was undertaken which fed into the subsequent dispersion modelling results. In addition, an air quality neutral assessment and construction dust risk assessment was undertaken. The results showed that no mitigation was required to reduce residents’ exposure to air pollution as all of the objectives were shown to be met. However, in order to reduce air pollution, 20% of the residential car parking spaces will have electric vehicle charging points, with the scope for this to be increased to 100% and a travel plan will be developed to reduce trip generation from the site.

Earlier in the year, Aether was involved in expert witness work at a planning inquiry for the proposed development of 1,250 residential units and commercial space in Norwich.  The inquiry focused on the estimated impact of the development and whether this was acceptable in relation to recent air quality planning case law. The outcome is expected shortly.

In addition to assessing the impact of large developments, Aether has also recently undertaken work for the proposed construction of five residential units, data centres involving assessing the impact of backup diesel generators using hypergeometric probabilities and industrial biomass boilers for wood waste.
